Google are def stepping up their attempts to increase relevancy of search results to the end user. We have already had the vince update and another one in march aimed at people gaming the system (a lot of them for affiliate sites). The importance of personal search in Google's future is going to be huge. Tailoring a user's results based upon their searching habits (and probably in future years, their social habits), is going to make life a lot more difficult for ranking websites. The SERP's pages are already awash with Google's own properties, this is probably going to increase as well. The effects are an overall squeeze on the top 10 search results. If we look at how Google Maps, Google Base results, Youtube videos etc are changing the SERP landscape, there is a lot less real estate to play with. It highlights the importance of your website acting as a highly interactive central hub rather than a traditional static site.
